File It Under: Georgia Chick Revisited

It seems that step one of my advice is underway. Apology issued. Half of America just looked at their wives and said "Can I change the channel now?"

You go girl.

However, the political asshattery continues.

First:
"The city of Duluth is considering asking Wilbanks for reimbursement expenses incurred during the search -- as much as $60,000."
WTF? Last time I checked, we're not a police state. If I get a wild hair to leave work and walk to Portland without telling anyone, it's weird, but still legal. The city police are the ones who tried to "pull out al the stops" so that they would PR well with the rest of the US. They made the budget, they spent it, not her. She shouldn't have to pay a cent.

Second:
"Wilbanks could face a charge of making a false police report -- a misdemeanors punishable by up to 12 months in jail -- or making false statements to authorities -- a felony that carries a maximum of five years' imprisonment."
Right. Just a question. Do you add that charge to every person who lies when they say they aren't guilty of a crime. I didn't think so. The police are trying to save face for sounding the alarm on this. Why? You doing your jobs. We respect that. If you suspect a kidnapping occurred, you acted right. On a personal note, I have heard the "amber alerts" while driving in my car and made a mental note to look for the car and person described only to find out that it was something else later. You now what my response is: Whew, I'm glad that it was a false alarm. I don't think "Wow, the cops blew that one." You guys get crappy info and unreasonable situations and deal with it the best you can. Let her go, you'll waste more taxpayer money if you jail her.

Third:
"Calls for an apology intensified Tuesday, including one from the fiance's father, Claude Mason, a former mayor of Duluth."
Should we call for McGruff the crime dog to apologize as well? Maybe Ronald McDonald? How about the guy that played Roscoe P. Coltrane? Dorks.

Fourth:
Fernando Mateo, president of Hispanics Across America, a New York-based organization that advocates for Hispanic communities, called for an apology to the Hispanic population of the United States, and especially those living in Georgia and New Mexico, because she had falsely accused a Hispanic man of kidnapping her."The Hispanic community has been hurt enough," Mateo said. "She should apologize to us first, then her fiance and her family."
Let me extend the middle finger of injustice to Mr. Mateo and his obvious PR grab. I didn't see any riots in the streets or even a sound talking to breaking out in the news due to these events. We're there internment camps that I missed? Did they round up every Hispanic they could find and have lynching? No? SO, let me help you out.
"Nearly three quarters of migrate farmworkers earned less than $10,000 a year and three out of five farmworker families lived in poverty."
Quit waiting around for an apologizing debutante and go fix that. Call me when you're done, attention whore.

The human element made this story interesting but the political maneuvering has made a lot of people look really, really dumb.
