Santa sits upon a throne of lies

I'm fairly critical of Christmas. 'Tis the season for rampant consumerism. 'Tis the season for shameless, unmitigated commercialism. It's nothing new either. Santa Claus has been a tool of the Coca-Cola Company since long before I was born. Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer was a Montgomery Ward marketing gimmick back in 1939.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying Christmas is evil or should not be celebrated. I don't think a flaming fecalgram should be left on the doorstep of neighbors with outrageously annoying and flamboyant Christmas displays. I firmly believe however that these displays have no utility, have no purpose other than to boast of Chrismas spirit. These displays therefore represent the competitive nature of seasonal giving, which of course wouldn't make it selfless rather selfish.

Before I forget, GIS 'christmas sweater', see who's outing themselves.

"Merry Christmas Mom and Dad. Oh yeah, I'm gay."

On the other end of the spectrum is the right-wing camp, those crazy christians who speak of a war on Christmas and even claim President Bush bowed to the pagan forces of securalism with the release of the 2005 "Holiday" card. What these arguments fail to include is that the 2005 "Holiday" cards include a biblical quote, Psalm 28:7. If that's secular, then what the hell is this? ---->

The Raving Atheist says it best with his unending critique of religion.

"Christmas is a time to celebrate the birth of a sweet baby, sent to earth to be beaten, whipped, scourged and impaled on a cross with rough spikes splintering the bones of his hands and feet," said Donna Rossi, the mother of two. "Why are they trying to destroy the meaning of the holiday by exposing our kids to brutal executions involving mythical characters?"

Beautiful.
