With all due respect for the University of Hawaii, the "Rainbow Warriors" that keep pushing for gay marriage and gay rights kind of have themselves to blame for this.
President Bush and Senate conservatives renew their battle Monday to ban same-sex marriage through a constitutional amendment that has a slim chance of passage.
Is it a cheap political move designed to create some conservative cohesion at the gay's expense? Sure it is. But when they started marrying gay coupples in San Fran you had to know it was essentially painting a big bull's eye on yourself.
There are still states with sodomy laws on the books and laws against sex toys, you had to know that you were pushing it. It was the ultimate in bad political timing. In fact, it may very well be the reason that you have Bush as the President today. Everyone came out to vote against you and you're attempts to get married.
Now I know what a lot of people are thinking. That Gay doesn't equal "bad" and that they should have the equal right and protections of non-gay couples and all that other stuff. That's great. I'm glad you feel that way. Whoopity doo.
What gay people don't get is this: All straight people really, secretly want is for gay people to shut up and move on. Just like the zealots in middle eastern Islam you miss the point: we don't care. We really don't. The only time I think about gay marriage is when it's in the news or someone asks. Other than that, gay people and gay rights and gay lifestyle never cross my mind. With all due honesty, I worry about dealing with my issues. I don't care about what you do or how you feel or what your rights are because it doesn't effect me and when it does all I want if for it to not effect me.
You guys are like the Jehova's witnesses, every time I encounter you, whether your nice or not, all I want is to shut the door and go back to my life because I'm not interested in you and what you're selling. We just don't care.
Add to that, most of the time I feel like I'm giving you a pass, as it is. I think that homosexuality is wrong. A sin. Against the law of God. Immoral. However, am I carrying a pitchfork and breaking down doors to "vanquish the sinners" or anything like that? No. Because I also think that lying, drunkenness, adultery, greed, sloth, vanity, pride and hate are sins as well. Once again, the way I see it I'm dealing with my own sins. That's plenty enough to keep me busy. To get all bent and chase after you and harass you would be fruitless because I'd pretty much just have to wage a war on humanity in order to be even keeled. However, I don't feel any more prone to make special allowances for you, even though you don't think it's wrong, than I would for drunks, liars, thieves or anyone else who indulges in their sins. No one makes them for me. Where are my advocates to extol the virtues of being a balding, overweight white guy who has a little too much credit card debit, likes to drink beer and feels that Oprah is part of the problem? Well, aside from beer commercials and credit card commercials? No one bends over backwards to accomodate me, so why am I supposed to change my views and beliefs for you? I don't see a lot of ass kissing going on in the gay community to tell us how great our marriages are. Shit, all you guys want are the "rights" and the "social acceptence." Well, you're also going to get divorce and alimony and losing half of your fisical worth with that? You might want to reconsider that.
So to sum up, while this amendment probably won't pass, consider it for what it is: a warning. You pushed too hard, too fast and it almost caught up with you. Give it 20 years and I bet you'll have gay marriage. But right now, in the polarized and divided America, you had better keep your heads down and stow that crap. There is a Bush brother out there and you guys might end up with another 4 years of Republican Bush as president if you don't watch it. I can hardly say this with a straight face, but we know how you Gay folks hate Bush.*
