Tales of stupidity

I remember one time when the geologist I worked with told me about the stupidest thing he had seen in his life time. It brought up 2 stories.

The first one was when enviromentalist handcuffed themeselves to the legs of a jack up rig. The only problem is that they did it at low tide in a place that has a 30' tidal swell. The coast guard bailed them out before they drown.

The second was when he watched a geology professor and some graduate student try to walk over a cooled lava flow. According to him as you stepped on it you could feel the cooled rock float like standing on a water bed. Well, one spot "popped" and squirted a nice jet of magma that gave two of the graduate students 3rd drgree burns.

Those are both pretty bad.

However, this isn't much better. The UN, in it's infinite wisdom, decided to send "observers" into South Lebanon. Nevermind that it's a war zone. Never mind that one set of combatants have shown a willingness to bomb innocent women and children. Nevermind that they are broadcasting signals like crazy in a place where every other electronic signature indicates a potential rocket being targeted. No, those are things to ignore because our baby blue helmets and good intentions will save the day.

So what happens? Some of the guys they have there get blasted. Ironically, the same UN that has drug ass about what to do in Darfur has managed to put observers on the ground and get them killed in less than a week. Even more amazing is that the same Darfur paralyzed UN has managed to condemn Israel for it "obvious intentional strike." The same people that coudn't decide whether or not Darfur was "genocide", much less what to do about it, have no problems laying blame at Israel's feet.

The Money quote of the day goes to Israel's U.N. ambassador, Dan Gillerman:
"I am surprised at these premature and erroneous assertions made by the secretary-general, who while demanding an investigation, has already issued its conclusions."

While that's a great point, I doubt that he's really suprised. The UN has already shown a dizzing capacity for stupidity based on politics. Why would they stop now?
