Radical Feminism
| I recently had the pleasure to have an engaging discussion with a radical feminist. This label, "Radical Feminist", is one that was self employed. She was quite clear in pointing out that she was rebelling against the patriacrhy and the societal power structure that forced women into subservient and secondary roles. Furthermore, she was unbound from the rules and conventions that are generated by men to force womyn, her spelling, into male defined lifestyles of culturally endorsed rape and slavery, also known as marriage. To say that her perspective is somewhat skewed from the one that I have is an understatement. However, I listened politely and attempted to understand the viewpoint and perspective that she derives this mode of thought from. While I do not doubt the seriousness with which she pursued the subject, it became rather apparent that much of the "freedom" she wished to have mandated a social upheaval. Likewise, many women do not consider the conventions of society to be oppressive, but in fact enjoy the lives that they live as wives and mothers and the like. I asked her about these women and she said that they were brainwashed but that effective social engineering could allow them the freedom to find a truly equal place in this world. I asked her how this should be achieved considering the natural level of resistance she could expect. She said that governmental implementation of changes to reproduction and family structure were the only course, of course. I asked her if she found any irony in the fact that the execution of her plan relied on the threat of violence by a male dominated police force to restrict the freedom of some individuals and uproot the basic human process of reproduction in the name of equality. She was somewhat stifled. What if that police force, or government decided to not obey? She was perplexed. I then asked her to make sure that she put three raw sugars in my cafe mocha. For some reason, these kinds of ideas seem really great until one crude factor is faced: If we, the men, have the power, what the hell makes you think that we are going to give it up to the single 19 year old coffee shop attendees of the world? Sorry, sweetie, but you just keep living that dream until your emo boyfriend picks you up from work or until your waiting to take up arms. See, when you talk about destroying the family you are treading in those places where I will shoot first and ask questions later. Thankfully, experience dictates that you'll more than likely be making pottery in a junior college and spending your husbands money, while you cart the kids around in the SUV and whine about whatever Oprah said yesterday, so your not a real target. However, in the silent moments between Pilate's and play dates, never doubt for a moment that we evil men, who are dominating society, didn't get here by playing nice. Besides, you might just find that all of that "culturally endorsed rape and slavery" isn't such a bad thing when you actually quit hating men long enough to find one that you want to care about. If that doesn't work, the revolution will be waiting for you. |
